Riders – Everest Challenge

It’s that time of year again when I do something crazy for the Children’s Hospital! Fancy donning your lycra and joining me….??

I’m an ambassador for the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity, and every year or so I organise an insane Charity event to raise money for them. Last time I did White Collar Boxing (and won), the time before that I cycled from London to Manchester.

This time….. I’m cycling Everest(!)

OK, not really, but I’ve worked out that the Cat’n’Fiddle run is a 20th of the height of Mount Everest, thus on 26th June, I’m leading a team of cyclists to see how many times we can, collectively, cycle up Everest. I’ve just done the first trial run:

It was tough, but manageable (7 miles and 1500ft of climbing), ….and only took 30mins. Allowing for the down runs, and some rest/tiredness, I’m hoping that most riders will manage 10-12 runs in 8-10 hours.

Fancy taking part? 

I’ve got handful of riders lined up so far, some doing all day, some just a few runs. They include leading NW CEOs, a pro-cyclist and several notable Entrepreneurs (plus some surprise guest riders), but I’d love to get more people involved doing 1, 2 or 10+ runs?

Registered riders will receive a Charity Cycle Jersey and other kit, a coaching/power session from a British Cycling coach plus various nutritional products & advice/programmes for the ride and more importantly, the weeks leading up to it. We’ve also got a couple of surprises. 😉

I’ve already got a small handful of both national and local corporate sponsors (and still securing more) but have already raised close to £4000 before even commencing individual sponsorship; Sponsors are being rewarded with their business logos/names on bespoke cycling jerseys that all registered riders will receive, (plus logos on the on-route signage for higher donations). We’ve got a ‘base camp’ being set up at Arighi Bianchi; food and route planning all in place; plus Theo Paphitis is behind the campaign (and Ryman sponsoring the event) to maximise the PR/promo reach!

The focus this year is raising money to build a Helipad at the Hospital – unbelievably, being the UK’s largest Children’s hospital, the Air Ambulance has to land upto 30 mins away at Barton and have a ‘blue light’ road transfer. God forbid it’s my daughter, Ava, in the air ambulance, but if it is, I would want her there ASAP! The Helipad will get her into the operating theatre within 2 minutes of the helicopter landing. The £3.9m we needed is now just about £600,000 short, so we are really close.
